A day by car: Castellfollit, Besalú and the Fageda d'en Jordà

The medieval bridge of Besalú over the river Fluvià

If you want to rest your legs for a day, the Garrotxa has plenty to see a short drive away. This is a route for a relaxed day out.

Besalú

One of the best-preserved medieval towns in Catalonia. You enter over the fortified Romanesque bridge across the Fluvià, with its tower in the middle. Stroll through the Jewish quarter, where the mikveh (ritual baths) survives, and visit the churches of Sant Vicenç and Sant Pere. The tourist office runs guided tours.

Castellfollit de la Roca

The village sits on top of a basalt cliff almost 50 metres high, formed by lava flows and carved by the Fluvià and Toronell rivers. The best view is from below, on the road; up top, walk to the viewpoint next to the old church of Sant Salvador.

The Fageda d'en Jordà and the volcanoes

In the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, near Olot, the Fageda d'en Jordà is a beech wood growing on a lava flow: in autumn, when the leaves turn gold, it's spectacular. Waymarked footpaths link it with the Croscat and Santa Margarida volcanoes.
